The story isn't that Microsoft is killing GitHub; it's that Microsoft's AI priorities have made GitHub's internal position ambiguous at precisely the moment every business unit needs to justify its place in the portfolio.

Spotify's One-Day AI Blitz

Few companies announced more AI products in a single session than Spotify. The platform launched an AI-generated remix tool via a UMG licensing deal, a NotebookLM-style desktop app for personal podcasts, an ElevenLabs-powered audiobook creation tool, and a Reserved concert ticketing program for superfans. Separately, a new study covered by The Verge found that bossware platforms — used by hundreds of thousands of employers to monitor workers — pipe employee data not just to employers but to Meta, Google, and data brokers. The throughline: the surveillance economy has grown large enough that the distinction between corporate and government data collection is increasingly nominal.

The AI Executive Order That Wasn't

The White House delayed signing an executive order that would have required pre-release government security reviews of AI models — Trump's stated reason being that he didn't want to "get in the way" of AI leadership. The practical effect is a continued federal regulatory vacuum, even as London's mayor blocked a Palantir contract with the Met Police and cities globally move faster on AI oversight than Washington.

The pattern is consistent: platforms that bet on AI early are gaining leverage, those that didn't are losing internal arguments, and the regulatory structures meant to govern all of it remain mostly hypothetical.
